March'05

I can't remember now why I picked this up in the first place. But a shortish novel that's been 'tbr' for the longest time - i'm putting that right now

This is the story, as told by a young girl, who, with her older sister Bea and her mother, travel to Marrakech. We don’t know the girls name, or her age, or much in the way of background, but we see the world entirely through her innocent and credulous eyes; sometimes sad, sometimes finding joy in the simplest pleasures, as the family come across a whole host exotic characters, unusual situations and painful lessons. It’s a pleasant enough little read, but in the end I felt sorry for the girls, the innocent victims of a wayward and seemingly selfish mother as she tries to run away, find herself, find love...I’m not really sure?

At one point the girls are talking about what they want to be when they grow up, after thinking about it, Bea decides, "I don't know. Normal. I think"

Her younger sister wants to go home to England, to live in a house with a garden. Her mother says, 'all right'

"Do you mean all right yes or all right maybe?"
"I mean all right hopefully"

Like looking at the world through an interesting marble, devoid of judgement, suffused with baking heat, and spice, and alien culture.

Thank you very much for sending me this book. I usually like books that are told through the innocent eyes of a child, so it will be interesting to see if this meets up to expectation.

I was a bit disappointed in this book and for the most part I wasn't really sure what was going on! I suppose I should have read the synopsis by Bookgroupman again, prior to starting it, then I might have understood it a little better! But I never and I didn't!
