One Man's Castle : Clarence Darrow in Defense of the American Dream

I was drawn to this book because Clarence Darrow was mentioned in the title; I stayed with it because I was fascinated by the story of Dr. Ossian Sweet. If you're looking for great insights into Darrow, the lawyer, this probably isn't the book for you. But, if you're looking for a discussion of one of the most important but least-known cases in America's history, one I'd honestly never heard of before reading the book, this is it.
Dr. Ossian Sweet is cultured, refined, intelligent, well-spoken, literate, and black. Black at a time in this country when the Ku Klux Klan was extremely active and there were as many as two lynchings a week.
This was the perfect read for Black History Month. The Sweet case is just as important in Civil Rights history as Brown vs. The Board of Education, yet most of us know nothing about it. I encourage you to pick up this book and read about it yourself.
