I received this book on 8/11 from Multnomah Publishers (Sisters, OR) to register, read, review, and release. My daughter wants to read this too. Please PM me if you'd like to read it after me.
c. 2003 -- a sisterchick novel -- Americans -- Finland -- Women -- Female friendship -- Fiction / General / Contemporary

Back Cover: Helsinki or Bust! Ohh, yeah ... these gals are gone! Get set for adventure as the sisterchicks drive, float, or fly off to faraway places -- exploring new territory and delighting in the soul ties that forever bind their hearts.

Sisterchick (n): A friend who shares the deepest wonders of your heart, loves you like a sister, and provides a reality check when you're being a brat.

Meet unlikely best friends Sharon, quiet mother of four, and Penny, former flower child/motorcycle mama. Connected as young moms, their 20-year friendship is about to take a surprising leap! Penny hatches plans for a "post-kids" trip to seek out her only living relatives -- somewhere in far-off Finland.

Oh, Penny Girl, what have you done? The land of reindeer, Finnish saunas, and starry, starry nights holds infinite promise for the free-flying sisterchicks, who feel their hearts fill with a new zest for living ... and a fresh view of the One who flung the galaxies across the heavens!

Update: PROMISED to havfaith when I'm done reading it (9/2/03)

Journal Entry 2 by ReadingGal79 from Antioch, Illinois USA on Tuesday, January 13, 2004
I finished reading this today (1/15). This book starts out slow ... while still grabbing my attention. But then it had me crying and laughing along with Penny and Sharon on their unforgettable experience in Finland ... as Penny discovers her family and country of origin. This is a great, heart-warming book of family ties and friends.

I've never heard the rest of this cute little rhyme. Quote (page 217): "Williiam looked up at her. Good night. Sleep tight. Don't let the bedbugs bite. If they bite, squeeze them tight, and they'll not bite another night. Good night!"

Chapter 18 gave me a wonderfully fun birthday idea for my two sisters. I've had a manicure, but never a facial or a pedicure. I think it would be a blast for us 3 sisters to do together. I have to have pictures of them with cucumbers on their faces. ;-)

Favorite Quote (page 266): "You came on this trip with me." [Penny]
"You invited me on this trip." [Sharon]
"Yeah, but you came. You did it. You stayed with me. There should be a word for women like you." [Penny]
"There is. It's friend." [Sharon]

Released on Saturday, January 17, 2004 at Fellow BookCrosser in Postal release, Postal Release Controlled Releases.

I'm mailing this today to havfaith in Alaska ... as part of a long awaited trade. Thank you for your patience in allowing me to read it first before sending. This is a great book. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Journal Entry 5 by havfaith from Spokane, Washington USA on Wednesday, February 25, 2004
Once I got to this one a couple days ago, it went quickly! It was both entertaining and heartwarming. I thoroughly enjoyed the story of these best friends helping each other enter into the second half of their lives. No matter how well we think we know each other, and ourselves, there's always more to learn. And it's never too late to reinvent yourself! =)

I have to agree with the marital advice given my the Finnish grandma: work fewer hours, have lunch together once a week, and kiss at least twice a day whether you want to or not! =)

It's nice to have Christian fiction that's not a romance novel for a change! I'll be keeping an eye out for Sisterchicks Do the Hula!...

I've loaned this to a friend but after it finds its way back to me, I'll be starting a ring with it.

Journal Entry 6 by havfaith from Spokane, Washington USA on Thursday, February 26, 2004
This ring has been completed. Thanks to all who participated! =)

There is now a ring for the 2nd book in this series, Sisterchicks Do the Hula!, started by dhansen1019! =)

I am also hosting a ring for the 4th book in this series, Sisterchicks Down Under! PM me to join. =)

What a heartwarming book. I found myself laughing out loud, crying, and thinking seriously throughout this tale.
I too loved the advice of the Finnish Grandma. I think I will take it to heart and start practicing it on my hubby right away!
It was a quick and enjoyable read. I had to force myself to put it down to go to sleep last night, and as soon as I got my kids off to school my nose was right back in it. I have a long list of sisterchicks to recommend it to.
Thanks havfaith!!

Oh, what a fun book! On a hunch that this would be a great vacation read, I slipped it in my back for my weekend at the beach. I finished it on the road before we even arrived!

Penny and Sharon have been friends for years, through seven children, bringing Penny to Christ, being neighbors, being separated by states, but they's remained close as, well, as the sister neither has.

When Penny decides to discover her Finnish roots, she makes good on a promise many years old and she ships Sharon a ticket to accompany her. As Penny finds her roots, Sharon finds out about herself, too. As havfaith so aptly noted, Sharon realizes it's never to reinvent yourself!

Entertaining, heartwarming, it's hard to find adjectives that earlier readers have not used. But they are apt, and I recommend the book highly.

It will be off to the next reader soon! Enjoy!

I realy enjoyed this book. It reminds me of a few friendships that I have and a few trips that I have taken. Nothing quite so dramatic as another country and searching for relatives, but still great trips with great friends!

I received Hwy18's mailing address this morning and will be mailing this out early next week.

this was such a wonderful story about 2 friends and their adventure together, I hated to see this story end, all of us need a friend that is willing to be truethful and love on us in the way these two Sister chicks did for one another.I felt like I made 2 friends and will truley miss hearing about all of their adventures together.
AWSOME read!

I finished this over the weekend. This was a really enjoyable read and a refreshing change from some of the chick lit I've been reading. Penny sounds like a fun person to know!

Journal Entry 25 by TramGirl from Ballarat, Victoria Australia on Tuesday, November 30, 2004
Got this in the post today...will probably take it away with me this weekend (interstate conference) to read on the plane!

Journal Entry 26 by TramGirl from Ballarat, Victoria Australia on Monday, December 6, 2004
Well as promised I read it over the weekend, got me through the plane rides to and from Adelaide, and I finished it just as we landed back in Melbourne! I enjoyed this book and liked the fact that the ladies just let things happen for them. I would be much more like Sharon I think, wanting things planned and organised (I wish I could be more like Penny, doing things on a whim and waiting to see what was next!). I didn't expect it to have the religion theme throughout but it worked for the book so it wasn't a problem, just interesting b/c it didn't look/sound like it would (never judge a book...)

Anyway I look forward to reading the second book, I have PM'ed Hengameh and will post this off to her when I hear back!

22/12/04: Posted off to Hengameh, hopefully it won't take long to arrive!

on its way to silverstarry

Journal Entry 30 by silverstarry from Berkeley, California USA on Saturday, July 9, 2005
Just received this in the mail today - my boyfriend was laughing at the postmark, which says 29 Jul 2005. He wants to know if Iran has a time machine that sends mail back in time! I am looking forward to reading this book!

Journal Entry 31 by silverstarry from Berkeley, California USA on Saturday, July 9, 2005
This was a quick, fun read. Honestly, I didn't love it but I liked it enough to read it all in one sitting this afternoon. Despite the fact that I went to Catholic school, sometimes the phrase, "Let's pray about this," annoyed me. I'm all for letting things happen, and I like to believe that certain things are "signs," but saying, "Let's pray about this," instead of saying, "Let's just see what happens," got on my nerves after it had happened a few times. That might be the hunger talking though - I was getting pretty hungry reading about some of the yummy food they ate! Another aspect of this book that I disliked was that there were certain things about Sharon that I could not sympathize with. I can't imagine even considering cancelling a trip just because my 18 year old broke his wrist. He's a big boy, and he'll be fine for a week! I also can't imagine having all white "unmentionables" (as Sharon called them) and hesitating to buy colored underwear. This woman is younger than my own mother, who has bras and underwear in every color of the rainbow! Lastly, sometime the author's writing seemed very "creative writing class" ("I allowed her dark eyes to shine their amber-flecked light on me") or euphemistically pre-teen ("I gave myself freely to my husband as if it were the first time and the last time and the best time, all in one" - which reminded me of a teenaged virgin Monica on Friends asking Rachel, "Are you going to give him your flower?"). Despite these issues, I enjoyed the story of friendship and love between Sharon and Penny. I also agree with havfaith that it's nice to read a chick lit book that isn't centered on manhunting and dating.

Thanks so much to havfaith for sharing this book!

Arrived in the mail around noon; I've already read a lot in it!

The Sisterchicks didn't stay in Finland for long; I hope they'll return before the book ends. I love Penny's spicy personality!

Journal Entry 34 by havfaith from Spokane, Washington USA on Friday, August 5, 2005
Just wanted to let those of you who participated in my ring for this book know that I am now starting a ring for the 4th book in this series, Sisterchicks Down Under! I enjoyed the 4th just as much as I did the 1st and since all the books have different characters, you don't have to read them in any particular order. (I haven't yet read the 3rd.) PM me if you'd like to join. Be sure to include where you are and your shipping preferences. It will probably start out next week sometime. =) Follow the link above for more on the book...

Journal Entry 35 by Megi53 from Danville, Virginia USA on Sunday, August 7, 2005
I enjoyed this so much! I still wish there had been more about Finland, but the UK adventures were lots of fun and inspirational, too.

Miss Molly, William's chicken, was hilarious! And so were Wolf and Moonglow, the hippies!

I enjoyed all the little details such as Penny's new hairstyle; the beautiful china teacups Sharon bought for souvenirs; the rain, sleet, frost, and stars everywhere the sisterchicks went.

The writing was very touching. An example: (page 211)

"My thoughts were of my family. I missed them down in a place so deep in my heart that I don't think I'd ever gone there before."

Now to read Sisterchicks Do the Hula!. And Sisterchicks In Sombreros. And the Glenbrooke series -- the good Christian novels just keep coming!

Mailing this book to Suefitz tomorrow after work.
