This one was a bonus with a bookray. Looked over the first couple of pages. It appears to be well-written, but not my thing. Will pass along with the bookray and maybe someone else will appreciate it.

Received with the bookring. I've got about three bookring books right now, so I'm trying to be faithful and read them all quickly. Work doesn't really let me do that, however. I do plan on passing this book on with the bookring book, however, so that the next person can enjoy. I'll update upon reading.

I finished this book rather quickly as well. After my current reads of Sex Changes and She's Not There, my coworkers asked me if I was trying to tell them something with the title of this book. Had to then explain that Monette was born a man and was always a man, it was (just) the story of his growing up and self-acceptance. I found the author's childhood years very interesting and compelling. I have a few gay male friends, but none so close as to actually go into the whole "life-story" detail. I found the years after Yale more troubling and frustrating. I ached for Monette to find someone with whom he could be comfortable and himself. The relationships with Greg and Scott were disturbing, but at least Monette was brutally honest, and very brave to actually recount this time of his life in his autobiography. I was dismayed that the book ended upon meeting Roger, but perhaps that's where Borrowed Time picks up. I'm sure I'd read that, or another book by this author. His writing style, though somewhat awkward in the first chapter, begins to flow naturally by chapter 3 until the end of the book. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in GLTB studies. I did find that Monette's experience would most likely not be repeated with as much intensity in today's age (where it is at least marginally acceptable to be gay), but I'm sure that there are some frustratingly similar realities. I'll be sending this on to the next recipient of the She's Not There bookring.

Got this in a book ring. Amazing book. Shall be sent to the next person who wants it on the book ring... as soon as I figure out who that is.
