This book is surely a modern classic.
It tells the story of Meursault, a French Algerian who lives in Algiers. It is about his decline from being a simple "outsider' into becoming a full-blown "outcast" due to his failure to adhere to the simple and sometimes seemingly meaningless rules that society dictates we should adhere to.
It deals with the ideas that Camus would later develop in his philosophical essays, such as the absurdity of existence. Despite these weighty, ideas, it is written simply, and has an interesting plot, so very readable.
I love this book, firstly because it makes me think, and secondly for it's for the descriptions of the scorching Algerian sun and the frivolty of the sea.
