I'd been interested in this series for a while, in part because of the "virgins all have cat ears" concept (!), and I took advantage of the closeout sale at Borders to nab this and another volume.
This book picks up after a very dramatic reveal, so it's probably best to start the series at with Volume 1. (I had seen the anime series so I knew the setup, which helped.) In flashbacks, we see the meeting of Soubi and Seimei, which only adds to the level of trauma in the situation. There are lighter moments too, with Ritsuka realizing how fond Soubi is of his quirky roommate Kio (who's one of my favorite characters); this bit gets a little how-they-met flashback too, and it's charming to see them both younger and less troubled.
Later, we see Seimei menacing the boy Zeros (also favorite characters of mine, so I was very peeved with Seimei); they're stronger than he expects, but the situation escalates when Ritsuka and Soubi show up. And we get some very harrowing scenes indeed, blending the series' "words are weapons" concept with some very realistic dysfunctional-family anguish...
The main story ends with an ominous note - and then the book adds a couple of bonus stories to lighten the mood a bit.
[There's a TV Tropes page on the series, but do beware of spoilers.]
