Cover Her Face is P.D. James' first novel.

Headstrong and beautiful, the young housemaid Sally Jupp is put rudely in her place, strangled in her bed behind a bolted door. Adam Dalgliesh of Scotland Yard must find her killer among a houseful of suspects, most of whom had very good reason to wish her ill.

This was a re-read for me, and it was a real pleasure. I confirm the original 8 stars, and give a little extra credit because this was Ms James' very first book.

They don't make first books like this any more.

Here is one of my favorite quotes from the very beginning of the book. It is a flashback which sets the stage for telling the story, and it is also an example of James' ability to perfectly describe complicated relationships using very few words:
At the time, of course, the party was both ordinary and rather dull. Three of the guests, Dr Epps, the vicar and Miss Liddell, Warden of St Mary's Refuge for Girls, had dined together too often to expect either novelty or stimulation from each other's company.

What a surprise!!! My mail was delievered today after being away for 8 days. I can't believe I won. I have heard of P. D. James but never read her, so I am excited to have a new author. You did great, soozreader. I sent my "decoy" book before I went on vacation. I figured since two people sent me books I am the winner.

This is a new author for me. It reminded me of an Agatha Christie book. I found it enjoyable and there was a twist that I did not see coming. Thanks, soozreader, for sending me a book I have not read and enjoyed.

At our little meet-up today at Iguana Mia, I chose this book from Booklady's KTM (Keep Them Moving) pile. I have enjoyed every PD James book that I've read in the past, and look forward to enjoying this one, too! Thank you!

August 15, 2013: Short List!

August 18, 2013: Nothing better than reading a murder mystery all curled up in a B*I*G chair on a Sunday afternoon.

Aug. 22, 2013: Finished reading this. It was written in 1962 and reads just like a familiar Agatha Christie novel! A lot of fun to try to solve the murder mystery.

Reserved as part of The First Sentence Virtual Book Box.

November 6, 2013: This book will be off on a journey to Lithuania!!! Claimed from the First Sentence VBB by xlacrimax.

January 2, 2014: I had a problem printing out the customs form. This is the third time I'm heading back to the post office on Saturday. I'm printing them again, but every time I've gone, I was told something else is wrong. Sorry for the delay.

January 6, 2014: I hate this confusion so much since we have to print out the customs forms before we're allowed to bring the book to be mailed. I have to keep returning to the post office. This time, it will not even allow me to print it. I have to contact xlacrimax for some specific information. I think I may have the wrong postal code.
