I ordered this from Paperback Swap in anticipation of the 666 challenge, and am choosing to read it now because of the news that's been coming out of Egypt recently.

I'm glad I read this because it felt like a really personal look into a culture with which I am unfamiliar. In that respect, it was fascinating.

However, as a story, it ended up falling flat for me. The way the book is structured, it followed numerous people through a point in their lives, but I felt that most of the stories never really tied up adequately. The last scenes involving several of the characters really didn't feel finished; they just stopped showing up. Also, the timing felt off.. as the story jumped back and forth between characters, sometimes months passed for one character but days for another.

Still, very interesting novel and unlike anything I'd ever read before, so I definitely appreciated it in that respect.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

biisbsw is kindly taking this book off my hands as I panic about the possibility of moving halfway across the country. It's quite early in the process, and there isn't a whole lot I can at this stage to start preparing - except reduce the volume of things I intend to take with me. So, getting my extra books into the hands of fellow BookCrossers who want them is helping me feel a little better about the whole thing!

This book has mysteriously shown up in my mailbox, mailed apparently by "Barbara Wilson" but there is no comment in the journal entries to tell me how she got it or whether she is the Barbara Wilson I knew from my school... nor why she chose me to send it to. However, it was a lovely surprise and looks as though I will enjoy reading it, especially since I have read quite a few Eypptian novels in the past couple of years. So, to whomever has been involved in the various travels of this book, I am glad it has found its way to me.
