Three damaged children upset hte rigid mechanisms of an experimental school, in a haunting story by Peter Hoeg.

Wow, this is an intense book. Peter Hoeg is a little hard to read for me. But it was a very good book. I wish I found out more about Katarina at the end. If he ever found her. :( But of course at the end everything is clear.
Also takes a huge look at TIME. Very interesting, but way too deep for me. I don't think I'm smart enough to understand it without a class. Perhaps I will look online for a readers guide :) Anyways, this book is now available, but the pages are falling out!

Received as a RABCK all the way from the Czech Republic - I visited your beautiful city over 30 years ago. Thank you for your kindness Rhenium3. I hope to enjoy this novel - "Miss Smilla's Feeling For Snow" is one of my all time favourites!

What a strange tale - similar in style to Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow. The main characters Peter, Katarina and August were misfits and an experimental school system attempted to blend them in to the ‘system’. The school staff may have had good intentions, but they were very dictatorial in their approach and allowed no personal freedoms to any of the students. The execution of these intentions resulted in disastrous consequences for these three individuals.
Peter Hoeg wrote this in an autobiographical manner and I wonder if any of this was based on his life.
I got a bit bored with the later discussions on the science of time but overall, I really enjoyed this book. Thank you Rhenium3 for sending me this gem –sorry it took so long to read. I will repair the loose pages and make it available to another reader.

I've GOT to stop attending meetups! meganh insisted that I'd enjoy this one... and I have no self-control! Onto Mt TBR with you!

OK... I admit defeat with this one. I've been trying for days to read it and just can't get into it at all. Maybe the notion of disturbed adolescents in school is a bit too much like 'another day at the office' for me!
Actually, it was more Hoeg's writing style which finally defeated me - I found it dense and confusing and it didn't lead me to care about any of the characters or find the plotline accessible.
This one did make me think at times of the film 'Donnie Darko' which is one of my all time favourites. Seems that I can handle movies about time issues and possibly schizophrenic teenagers - just not Hoeg novels on the same theme.
Another one we'll have to agree to disagree on, meganh!

Picked up at brunch meetup about a year ago. Read it ages ago but found it difficult to get into, did not really enjoy it although I did preserve and read it to the end, not really my kind of thing! Hoeg's writing style make it difficult to even feel something for the characters.
