From the back cover: "East London, 1888 - a city apart. A place of shadow and light where thieves, whores, and dreamers mingle, where children play in the cobbled streets by day and a killer stalks at night, where bright hopes meet the darkest truths. Here, by the whispering waters of the Thames, Fiona Finnegan, a worker in a tea factory, hopes to own a shop one day, together with her lifelong love, Joe Bristow, a costermonger's son. With nothing but their faith in each other to spur them on, Fiona and Joe struggle, save, and sacrifice to achieve their dreams.
But Fiona's life is shattered when the actions of a dark and brutal man take from her nearly everything - and everyone - she holds dear. Fearing her own death, she is forced to flee London for New York. There, her indomitable spirit propels her rise from a modest West Side shop front to the top of Manhatten's tea trade. But Fiona's old ghosts do not rest quietly, and to silence them, she must venture back to the London of her childhood, where a deadly confrontation with her past becomes the key to her future."
This was such a great book! I could barely put it down! The characters are very well-developed and there are lots of twists and unexpected happenings. I highly recommend it!

Released by surface mail to Minerva101, who chose it from my Coffee, Tea and Dessert VBB. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.
Thank you for this lovely book and all the wonderful surprizes you sent with it. The book sounds very good and I hope I can find time to read it sooner rather than later.
I read this ages ago and went on to buy the rest of the series for my PC. Please forgive me for not journalling and for having it languish on my bookshelf for soooooooo long :(
I'm taking this to the Calgary Bookcrossing group today at Cravings to find a new reader

So excited to read this!!
Fabulous book. Seems slow to start but once it hooks you, prepare to make an extra large pot of tea the next morning...
Passing onto the next reader.
I realized I forgot to journal a bunch of books! Picked up in June.
I got this book from my daughter, who had to reduce her stash.
I enjoyed the characters in this book and the plot development. I would definitely "read" (I listened to this) another book by this author.
Taking this book to the April meetup to pass on to another reader.
I am taking this to the October meet up.
Picked up at the October meet-up of Calgary BookCrossers.

I took the bus up to Northeast Calgary just to hunt for some wild Bookcrossing books. I was excited to catch this one, since it has so many previous journallers! I left one of my favourite books (Heart Songs, by E. Annie Proulx) in the Little Free Library in its place.
This was a long and rambling story spread across decades and continents, but the author kept the number of characters and events manageable enough that the tale was easy to follow. The book has it all: unrequited love, small errors that irreparably alter lives (a la Thomas Hardy), vice, betrayal, business (both honest and not), politics, murder, plucky characters who claw their way from destitution to wealth, marriages (some for love, others for expediency), divorce, death, grief, loyalty, scandal, revenge, forgiveness, and vindication. Plus, tea and scones! I enjoyed it.
