I picked this up because I loved George R. R. Martin's "Haviland Tuf" short stories in Analog magazine. This book was not what I was expecting, though!
It took me quite a while to get drawn into the book. (VERY unusual for me.) But I was sufficiently hooked by the end of the book to go out and buy the other two volumes of the trilogy (of which this is the first). I haven't read the 2nd and 3rd books yet, but this one is ready to release.
