'Helen Knightly has spent a lifetime trying to win the love of a mother who had none to spare. And as this electrifying novel opens, she steps over a boundary she never dreamt she would even approach. But while her act is almost unconsious, it also seems like the fulfilment of a lifetime's buried desire.
Over the next twenty-four hours, her life rushes in at her as he confronts the choices that have brought her to this crossroads.'

As moving as it is unquestionably gripping; an unforgettable book.
I really like the style of Alice Sebold's writing; she keeps you captivated throughout the whole story.

Arrived in the mail yesterday, even though I didn't go get the mail until today :-). Thank you so much.
One of my goals this year was to get books on Mt TBR because of other BCers read - in particular books I received in 2011, 12 or 13. I am doing pretty well....
The current trend to have female protagonists that are icky is not to my liking. I kept hoping to like our "heroine", but I never got there. She had some good people around her though, and the writing was Excellent (which saved it from a one star review). I didn't feel this story had much redeeming to say.

Headed off to mcsar...as part of j4shaw’s wishlistgame
The wish list book arrived today with a couple of pleasant surprises. Thank you very much. Your generosity is much appreciated.
It is a compelling read, with raw and honest family and interpersonal dynamics. It is an uncomfortable read; after all, the protagonist kills her mother and the flashback is of a most unhealthy childhood of a single child with mentally ill parents. The book pulls me in despite the discomfort, and I feel for the characters. The book is well written and I like it.
