'Helen Knightly has spent a lifetime trying to win the love of a mother who had none to spare. And as this electrifying novel opens, she steps over a boundary she never dreamt she would even approach. But while her act is almost unconsious, it also seems like the fulfilment of a lifetime's buried desire.

Over the next twenty-four hours, her life rushes in at her as he confronts the choices that have brought her to this crossroads.'

One of my goals this year was to get books on Mt TBR because of other BCers read - in particular books I received in 2011, 12 or 13. I am doing pretty well....

The current trend to have female protagonists that are icky is not to my liking. I kept hoping to like our "heroine", but I never got there. She had some good people around her though, and the writing was Excellent (which saved it from a one star review). I didn't feel this story had much redeeming to say.

It is a compelling read, with raw and honest family and interpersonal dynamics. It is an uncomfortable read; after all, the protagonist kills her mother and the flashback is of a most unhealthy childhood of a single child with mentally ill parents. The book pulls me in despite the discomfort, and I feel for the characters. The book is well written and I like it.

*Reserved for VBB.
