Not Before Sundown

From the back:
"A young photographer, Mikael, finds a small, man-like creature in his courtyard: a troll, known from Scandinavian mythology as a demonic wild beast, a hybrid like the werewolf, and supposedly extinct. Mikael takes him home but soon discovers that trolls exude pheromones that smell like Calvin Klein aftershave and have a profound aphrodisiac effect on all those around him. But what Mikael and others who come into contact with the troll fail to learn, with tragic consequences, is that the troll is the interpreter of man's darkest, most forbidden desires.
A bestseller in Finland and translated into ten languages, Not Before Sundown (aka Troll: A Love Story) is a multi-award-winning novel of sparkling originality, a wry, peculiar and beguiling story of nature and man's relationship with wild things and of the dark power of the wildness within us."
'A sharp, resonant, prickly book that exists on the slipstream of SF, fantasy, horror and gay fiction.' - Neil Gaiman
'Chillingly seductive.' - Independent

This is one of my favourite Finnish novels and the second English-language copy I have bought for BC purposes :) I don't generally like scifi or fantasy (except for Harry Potter :D), but this novel is an exception. I read it ten years ago when it was first published and it has stayed in my top ten list ever since. A skillfully written, gripping and an original story, I hope it will appeal to the participants of The Favourite Book Roundabout!
(My number one favourite among Finnish novels is Under the North Star by Vaino Linna, but that is a thick, three-volume book and therefore not suitable for this roundabout.)

This book arrived today. It has been so long since I signed up for this BC game that I no longer have any information about it. Searching for who to send it to next was useless. If I am to pass it on, I need information on who is playing.

Arrivedat my doorstep. I don't really like scifi, I'm never able to follow it (although I've watched all Star Wars movies in one go, and I'm very proud of that ;) ) Anyway, I do like what the story is about and since Annimanni isn't into scifi either, but she does like this book, I have high hopes for a future between me and the book.

This book arrived safely in my mailbox yesterday.
Very interesting to see what other people's favorite books are. Had never heard from this writer before.
From the blurp on the back side it looks like and interesting read. Thank you for making it available, Annimanni and for sending it to me, dutch-book!

It was a very strange read, this book. But I liked it. Mostly because of the way it was written, the chapters where we, readers see things through the eyes of the character that is the storyteller and sometimes the scene is repeated by the other 'participant' in the scene.
I have difficulties with the fact that this book is types as scfi-fi. Or, maybe I don't understand the type of book that is since, like a few other readers here, do not read or like the genre much.
For me it was in general too normal (every day) to say it is sci-fi. At first I did not recognize Angel as a male character, since Angel is also a female name. Well, a book full of surprises. I'm happy to have read it, and I'm happy that I'm done.

This arrived here today, I'm guessing Karen got it and send it on without journalling it.
Anyway, it looks like a fun read, I really like fantasy actually and this seems right up my street with quirky sayings on the cover like: A punk version of the Hobbit and Troll: A love story. Can't wait to get stuck in to it.
So I started reading it yesterday and I've allready finished it. The short chapters meant I just raced through it. I really loved this book. It is odd and slightly disturbing. The plot is original, it is a fantasy, but only very a little of it. Most of it could just be based on real life. The troll is woven into the story in a very realistic way and I love stories where the real world meets a fantasy world.

Finished this a few weeks ago but I've been away from home with no net. Definitely a weird little book! I enjoyed it though, when I didn't expect to. Like others, I liked the layout of the chapters & the shortness of them - perfect bitesize reading chunks! Given the ending, I'd be interested in reading a sequel, but I'm happy that it's a stand-alone as there's too few of those.
I will get this posted off this week, and I do apologise for keeping it so long.

I've just realised I have read this book but my copy was called Troll: A Love Story which is why I didn't recognise it straight away. Here's what I said about it:-
I started reading this book not knowing what it was about and there were a few surprises at the beginning and a few more suprises when I read the blurb on the back of the book. That said, I did enjoy it, in a slightly guilty way at first but I really needed to know what was going to happen next. Unfortunately I did find the "add-ons" annoying and I began skimming them towards the end when I wanted to follow the story. Also I don't understand why the imported Filipino concubine was important. It wasn't really part of the love story and there wasn't enough of it to make an issue. Any neighbour could have been the necessary distraction. Much as I loved the book and it had a kind of happy ending, there did seem to be something missing but I don't know what...

Enjoyed this little one a lot.
Was not expecting to like it as the blurb does not do it justice. In the end though I was skipping the add-ons as they were too dry for such a quirky story.

Finally got round to this little gem.
While my current state of mind and the fact that I'm super busy clashed a bit with the format which peppers the plot with "scientific" & folklore chapters that are too slow for this compelling story, the chapter formatting made it very easy to skim the said parts. ;)
A fast paced & interesting read, and definitely different & unusual. Loved it!

I just didn't get this book. Generally, I love sci-fi/fantasy and thought it looked like an epic read (especially with all the good reviews above) but I just couldn't click with it.
I give it a 3/10 - finished book, but more a chore than pleasure. The story follows a photographer written under the name of Angel, who finds a troll & rescues it. Uhhm okay. And trains it to use a litter box made of paper after struggling to feed it. Cue gory image of living guinea pig being devoured. The only characted I cared for was Palomita, but even then I didn't understand why she was in it?
If the supernatural creature was a fairy I could definetly understand the interest. A girl falling for a pheromone rich fairy, with mythology trickled thorough the book would be an absoloute blast to read. This one is about a troll though. A furry, semi-intelligent beast. Beastiality I thought was going to have a bit more of a place in the book from other reviews ive read. I'm kinda glad it didn't delve too deep into it, having an orgasm while the beast sat on his lap though.. that was weird enough.
