The Secrets of a Fire King: Stories
9 journalers for this copy...
Many of the award-winning stories in this first collection feature strong, pragmatic women as protagonists, usually motivated by love in its broadest sense: A 19-year-old finds hidden strength after skydiving with an unstable boyfriend; a lonely, uprooted Asian woman makes a life in America; the cleaning woman of a famous scientist idolizes her employer despite suffering physically because of his experiments; a wife connects best with her husband during the time of their greatest challenge. Edwards utilizes her perceptual ability and keen eye for detail to delineate believable characters, many of whom are facing unique challenges. Their haunting situations are effectively complemented by unusual settings in Asia, America and Europe.

I like short story collections, and with a looming TBR pile, I like thin books like this! Thanks so much Fracula.
Edwards' skill as a storyteller has the reader fall quickly into the worlds of her characters. Of the fourteen stories I liked 'The Secrets of the Fire King' best as I could vividly imagine the setting and characters, (reminded me of the great movie 'O Brother Where Art Thou?), and the twist of the prey becoming predator was very good.
Thanks Fracula for the book, and I'll be looking for more by this author.

Released at the Calgary BC Meetup at the Joshua Tree Cafe today.
I was so good last month and now I blew it again and took home way too many books. I can just imagine getting accepted to grad school for the fall and having to give my notice a week earlier than I'd need to just to finish clearing out the backlog on my bookcrossing shelf!
I read this one on the bus to NYC over American Thanksgiving. The short stories were pretty good, though maybe I just prefer novels as a format to short stories. I still think the memory keeper's daughter was better but this was a worthy offering as well.

Passed to my friend for holiday reading!

Picked up at the June Calgary Bookcrossing Meeting.
These stories were really tableaus rather than being plot driven, but they were amazingly detailed and immersive. I really felt like I could see, hear, smell, taste and touch the scenes as they were described.
Taken back to the Calgary Bookcrossing Meeting.

Grabbed at get together
Definitely an interesting collection of stories. None are what I would call uplifting or happy. Some are downright depressing. The ones that aren't depressing are more revealing or people coming to significant realizations within their own lives.
Thanks for the interesting read!

Picked this up at the Nov. book crossing meeting
Picked this up a while ago and just couldn't get excited to read it. I'm not really a fan of short stories so am taking it back to the group to be passed onto the next reader on the list
Taking this to the November Book Crossing meeting to be passed on to the next reader.
Picked up this, and WAY too many books at the November meeting. Really liked her book, so will see how the short stories go.
Some of these stories I really enjoyed. The ones about Madame Curie and the parachuting were especially powerful for me. I suppose the Secrets of the Fire King was too - I couldn't finish it as it seemed to unsettle me so.
I am bringing this book back to the May meet up at Cravings.
Ok so sorry...just found this now,,,,
Just not my cup of tea. Read a couple stories....
I am taking this book to our monthly bookcrossers meet up at Cravings - the second Saturday of every month- to pass on to the next reader.
I don't remember putting my name on this book, but that is nothing new. I always get great books passed across the table to me!
Oh no!! This has been on my bookshelf for Way too long! I have started to sort through my bookshelves (one of three) and I have pulled two boxes of books that have been registered by other Bookcrossers and I am attempting to journal them to let folks know that they are safe. This will go in a box to bring it back to the group one day.
Happy 2022, May it be better for all of us!

Sorry, but I need to return some books back to the group at our meetup at Cravings. It has been such a long time since we have gotten together!
