From Fantastic Fiction.
A little boy is kidnapped as he stands with his satchel at the gate of his home, waiting for his lift to school. An ex-con finds it impossible to stay straight. A severely handicapped young woman dies in the night - has someone who loves her helped her out of this world? Once again, Susan Hill brilliantly creates a community, with detail so sharp and convincing that readers feel that these people are their neighbours. And that terror and evil are always in their midst...

Many thanks to Flutterbies9 for registering this on my behalf, I was keen to bookcross this as I am a Susan Hill fan though as you will see from my review below getting into the series didn't prove as easy as I had hoped, though I now recommend it wholeheartedly. This is a copy of a review I made on first reading The Pure in Heart in November 2010.

Book cover: ‘She draws us so far into her fictitious community that for the duration of the book (and some time afterwards) we too are living there’ DAILY MAIL

The Pure in Heart is the second of Susan Hill’s novels set in the English cathedral town of Lafferton and featuring the enigmatic Detective Chief Inspector Simon Serrailler.

A little boy is snatched as he stands with his satchel at the gate of his home, waiting for his lift to school. A severely handicapped young woman hovers between life and death. An ex-con finds it impossible to go straight… haunting and truthful, gripping and convincing The Pure in Heart is neither a thriller nor a whodunnit, but a fascinating crime novel arising out of character and circumstance.

‘Beautifully drawn characters…a tantalising mystery’ SUNDAY TELEGRAPH
‘Captures sinister atmosphere brilliantly…her characters are drawn with loving detail’ SPECTATOR
‘Highly unsettling’ DAILY TELEGRAPH
-----------------------------------------------------

At last, I am relieved, I engaged so much more with the characters in this book than I did with its predecessor, The Various of Haunts Men (2004). Reading The Pure in Heart placed me just where I wanted to be on completing that first book in the Serrailler series. Though I'd have to say Hill is playing the long game with this set of characters and in order to appreciate Serrailler's commitment to his work and his doubts about personal relationships I now see why The Various Haunts of Men unfolded at it did.

Clicking with this series was then as simple as really getting a grip on Serrailler. Also having some solid background for the town and it's inhabitants, as established in the first book, means this had more punch for me.

All the quotes (above) from the book cover resonate with the feelings that were stirred up for me on reading this. Hill’s creations glow, and the disquieting atmosphere here has such tangibly realistic feel it hurts. The Pure in Heart is richly involving though I more easily realised that as such in hindsight.

This was my first Crime Thriller and Susan Hill book. At first I found this book difficult to get into, so put it down on several occasions throughout the year. Finally, I pushed myself through the first few chapters and found myself completely absorbed in the characters and the way their lives began to intersect. I raced to the end, only to be disappointed with so many loose ends. I really hope the next book in the series ties up these loose ends, as I did enjoy the writing style of the author.
