Had a bit of a splurge at Better World Books - that place is dangerous! :-)

In this sequel to Postcards from the Edge, Suzanne Vale is (mostly) sober, has a daughter to a man who left her for another man, and is being treated for bipolar disorder (as with Postcards, the line between fiction and autobiography is often blurred). Deciding that the medication is suppressing her true personality, she stops taking it, leading to a near-disasterous manic episode which takes her to Mexico with her tatoo artist to buy drugs. From there she spirals further into madness, and eventually into a mental hospital and the chance of a return to sanity.

Not as good as Postcards, but it is a fascinating look at the delusions of mania and depression, and how easily the switch can flip from one to the other. The wit is so relentless in Suzanne's manic periods that after reading it you feel as exhausted as the people around her.

Going in my permanent collection for now.
