In a series of letters to her estranged husband, Eva tries to rationalise, understand and come to terms with her role as the mother of a boy who went on a high school massacre. She recounts her struggles and fears at becoming a parent and questions her possible role in Kevin's personality and actions and whether someone can be inherently evil. The fact that Eva sometimes comes out as arrogant and does not inspire empathy in the reader made her all the more complex and believable. This was the first book I've read by Lionel Shriver and has made me want to read others written by her.
