Fittingly, I found this in a used bookstore.
A manga about a used bookstore that sells manga (which I bought in a local used bookstore that has a small manga section). So an odd enough start. Each chapter is a separate story, and they vary a lot. Some are rather touching tales of people finding joy and meaning in their life through the miracle of manga. Others are bizarre and even a bit creepy, with characters who have gone too far and gotten too deep into their manga obsession. Overall a fun and entertaining book, that shows a love of literature and the power of good fiction, though focused on a specific format.
In watching anime and reading manga, I've often wondered why a culture that stresses conformity as much as Japan's does creates heroes in entertainment who are so flagrantly nonconformist. Partly, it's an escape, but it can be an inspiration too. Learning to relax is important.
Quotes:
The human body is made up of proteins and vitamins...and the human heart is made up of time and memories
Here, there...it's all the same...we're all humans on the same planet! For some reason I felt myself relax. A high-quality comic book about the American West written in France. To think that something like that existed...
