I've had this among my unregistered books waiting to be read for so long that I've forgotten where it came from - a charity shop somewhere, probably! I'm registering it now in an attempt to advance it up the reading order.
I generally enjoy historical fiction and have enjoyed other novels by Rose Tremain, so I hope to enjoy this one too :-)
Note: The cover art is different on this copy but I can't source the right one!

A few random thoughts on this interesting and engaging novel:
- the title accurately signposts the themes explored within;
- the language is beautiful, a flowing prose-poetry, a lyrical style to get lost in;
- various and varied strands are woven together to make an unforgettable whole;
- it's written in short episodes, moving around in time and place, focusing on different characters and changing narrators, without becoming at all disjointed;
- there's an abundance of wonderful characters, from innocent to wicked and all points in between;
- there's an authentic sense of history as this amazing novel transports its readers to 17th century Denmark;
- it inspired me to learn more about the real life King Christian IV and I was surprised to find how many characters appearing here actually existed.
Enjoyed and recommended!

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

While visiting relatives in Birmingham, I plan to take this book to a Sunday afternoon mini-Meet Up in this delightful cafe. I've spotted it on the Wish List of one of the BookCrossers I think will be there, so I hope it's not a mistake left over from when the Wish Lists were all muddled up! If it's not claimed during tea, it'll be left with the other books on the OBCZ (Official BookCrossing Zones) shelves!

Thanks for thinking of me and passing this book to me Nu-Knees! I know nothing about Danish history but I do enjoy this author, so looking forward to it.
