I'm so sorry: I didn't obey the instructions... "Put it under the tree." Which tree? The neighbour's birch in the backyard? I don't have any tree in my flat, and I didn't want to wild release a gift-wrapped book... So I just HAD to open it :-) And I don't regret it, I'm so delighted... Just a few days ago I came across this book again, in a newspaper article where journalists listed their favourite books of the year (the German translation came out in 2010) - and I thought I should really read it soon - and here it comes. Thank you so much, redfox5, for the chocolate too!!!

A compelling read. There are eight short stories, each stands for itself, but they are all interwoven, all somehow revolve around the Pakistani landowner K.K. Harouni, each focuses on somebody else – servants, family members, peasants etc. They are all set somewhere between feudalism and modernity, in a hierarchical, patriarchal society. Corruption and power structures are strong themes in most stories, and none is a very happy tale, but told without any sentimentality. I would only criticise that giving some of the female protagonists a bit more integrity would have been fair.
Reserved for a VBB.

Thanks for sending this to me. I want to read it straight away so I've decided that I'll read a story a day while unil I've finished the book I'm currently reading. :)

What a wonderful book! I enjoyed this very much and it was so engaging. I liked that although it was a series of short stories that could be read in their own right, they were also linked.

I'm reserving this to return to the 2nd round of the VBB as I think others will really like it.

Gosh, I found these short stories frustrating...both because some left me hanging for more about the characters and also most of the characters seemed trapped in unhappy situations. These was especially true of the female characters.

I had to read another more irreverent book inbetween the short stories so I didn't get bogged down by the sadness.

The underlying cultural norms of Pakistan were interesting.

Oppem, the Bookcrosser who previously journalled this book, passed away on June 23, 2012. I had the privilege of meeting her dear family and "catching" her large collection of registered books. I will be releasing this one soon.
