84 Charing Cross Road

No one can be a true book lover who has failed to read this book. A few years after WWII, Ms. Hanff began ordering books from Marks & Co. Books in Charing Cross Road. But the correspondence reprinted here is no mere "please send me the following". The exchanges reveal a woman who revels in learning and in the physical, as well as intellectual, beauty of the books she reads. True friendship springs up between Ms. Hanff and the people at Marks (very much like BookCrossing!)

I'm about halfway through this delightful book... but I have to stop and put it down for the night, as I'm enjoying it so much that I can't bear for it to end! Thanks for sharing this with me, mojosmom... it's a real treasure. :)

I'm finished! Though as much as I'm sorry it's over, I'm so very glad that I had the opportunity to read this wonderful book. I enjoyed watching the development of long-distance friendships between individuals with such different personalities, yet who shared a love for books and reading. Yes, it does remind me of the BookCrossing phenomenon!
Now, off to "The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street"!

Found the 84, Charing Cross Road with it´s sequel The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street in our mailbox today and sat on the sofa to read.
This is indeed a treasure for all booklovers (and -crossers). And I´m not sure if I can wait until November, when I´ll be going to England again. On my last visit I barely saw London at all, now I will at least spend two days there.
Thank you, Mojosmom and Dawni (thanks for the bookmark, too!)

Promised to bookaholic1346. Will send soon.
I'm so sorry about not journaling sooner - I hadn't even realized that I hadn't done it. Will read soon and pass along!
