This was a tough read, but I'm glad I pushed myself to continue. For one thing, if the curse of racism is ever to be lifted from our country, it will require something like our own Truth and Reconcilation Commission. Maybe we can never make adequate reparations, but at least we can look honestly at our past and acknowledge the pain.

The writing is vivid, if a little stiff at times. But the novel is tightly structured, around the briefcase the nameless narrator carries with him. Given to him under abominable circumstances, it becomes his identity, his hope, his weapon, until he winds up burning the documents of his life.

To future readers: I'd love to know where you found this book, whether you kept it or passed it on, and - if you feel like leaving any comments - what you thought about it. It's free, and you can be anonymous if you like. BookCrossing is an interesting hobby and a great way to share lots of books, and you're more than welcome to join the fun!
