A strange (and fun) mystery, featuring an unlikely detective: a precocious 11-year old who really should be incredibly annoying, but is written wonderfully sympathetically. It's set in a 1950s England that never quite existed (although, as the author points out in his notes, it should have), with just a pinch of surrealism.
