This was ok, but not the sort of book I usually read. I seemed to spend most of it confused - I just couldn't seem to keep track of details of the plot, which usually I'm quite good at. Still, another one ticked off the list!

Some reviews of the book:

1. "In The Maltese Falcon, Hammett secures every ingredient of the detective/ mystery suspense style so directly, so superbly, that it's a wonder anyone ever tried to write another detective novel after him."

2. "Dashiell Hammett's story "The Maltese Falcon" creates such suspense and interest for the reader, you may have to take a few days off work to finish it. You are taken on twists and turns throughout the story. Trying to figure out who's side the seductive Brigid O'Shaughnessy is on can be like guessing what came first the chicken or the egg. The main character Sam Spade is the classic private eye. A man who doesn't back down from any man, and doesn't back away from any women. The Maltese Falcon is described as such a treasure that you have no problem believing that it is indeed "A treasure worth killing for". As the story unfolds new characters reveal themselves, all interested in treasure. Alliances are formed and then broken. You never know who will betray who next. This book was rated as one of top 100 books of this century."

3. "You can't find detective stories like this anymore. Great for anyone who likes 1930's atmosphere and a no nonsense detective."

4. "Simply the best Hammett book. If you've seen the Bogart film version, you will see from reading the book that director John Huston basically appropriated virtually all the dialogue; the film runs like a line-by-line recreation of the book. Unlike the more fragmented novels such as "The Dain Curse", this book is a brilliantly set out and executed noir classic."

5. "Dashiell Hammett's classic tale of private detectives, sinister plots, and femme fatales is a timeless epic. Even if you are familiar with the story, or have seen the movie, it is well worth your time to read the novel. Hammett's prose, characterization, and narration are first rate, making for an extremely compelling read."

Posting to "kizmiaz" as soon as I get an address.

Just got it. I'm pretty overwhelmed right now but I'll try to read it and keep it moving soon.

I've just finished it and enjoyed it a lot. My first Dashiel Hammet book.
Sam Spade is one stone cold private eye, not a multi dimensional character but with some surprises none the less. I liked the fact that he really doesn't wear a gun and solves most problems with his big mouth or his fists.
Most of the characters aren't that great but they get the job done.
The plot is tight with a fast pace and a lot of twists, just like it should.
The way the story is written really does a lot for it because it draws the reader into that criminal mindframe and underworld.
I'll keep it traveling soon.
