The Third Lady
6 journalers for this copy...
Far from his work and family in Japan, Professor Dago is watching an autumn storm from the salon of the Chateau Chantal. But it is only when the power is cut that he becomes aware of a woman, also Japanese, to whose elegant melancholy he is instantly drawn.
Intoxicated by the darkess and his desire, Daigo finds himself sharing a secret that his mysterious partner can equal with a confidence of her own: they both want another person dead. Before he knows it, Daigo has struck a bargain that could separate him from this bewitching woman for ever. And it is a bargain of which he barely understands the half...
"In some respects The Third Lady recalls Strangers on a Train, but in all it is even more harrowing than Patricia Highsmith's tale... an exemplary suspense novel, one the reader will long remember". - Edward Gorman, author f Rough Cut and editor of Mystery Scene.
I liked the book. Japanese, and different type of suspense. Daigo is trying to find the mystery lady, and figure what and when he has to do something to keep his side of the bargain. The pace of the book is generally a bit slowish for a thriller but it fits the story as nearly all action and thrill is internal.

Safe journey little book - I hope you'll make many new friends on your travels!
"Don't ever apologize to an author for buying something in paperback, or taking it out from a library (that's what they're there for. Use your library). Don't apologize to this author for buying books second hand, or getting them from bookcrossing or borrowing a friend's copy. What's important to me is that people read the books and enjoy them, and that, at some point in there, the book was bought by someone. And that people who like things, tell other people. The most important thing is that people read... "

Received this book, which I'd chosen from bookstogive's Mystery/Suspense/Thriller VBB. I love mysteries set in different parts of the world and I'm really looking forward to reading this. Thanks, aetm!
This is the first mystery from a Japanese writer that I've read, and I enjoyed it. It was quite different in style from the mysteries I usually read, and it kept me in suspense right until the end.
Reserved for bookstogive's Mystery/Thrillers Around the World VBB.

I've sent this book to JudySlump612, who chose it from bookstogive's Around-the-World Mystery VBB. I hope you enjoy the book as much as I did!
Arrived here safely on a sickeningly steamy day, perfect to stay indoors and read. Thank you, mathgirl40, for the prompt shipping, and also for all the labels and the very kind note!
This was really good - thank you, mathgirl, for sharing it! It's frustrating that I can't say much in this journal entry about why I liked it, for fear of spoiling it for future readers. Let me just say that in a relatively short (249-page) book you will find many surprising plot twists, as well as descriptions of life in modern-day Japan. Like other Japanese books and films, this doesn't spoon-feed you any easy answers, but leaves you with questions and implications that earn this book a respectable amount of space in your memory.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
DrSlump612 has really enjoyed his visits to Japan, and has asked to have this now that I'm finished.
Putting it on my TBR - looks good.
I haven't read too many modern Japanese mysteries; this one was very good.
Keeps your attention until the very end.

I picked this up at a BC meeting. I'm looking forward to reading a Japanese mystery by an author other than Miyuki Miyabe.
For whatever reason, I just can't get into this book. I'm letting it go in the hopes that it will find a more compatible reader somewhere.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Left on the bookshelves.
Picked up from the shelves at Riverview Cafe. Looks good.
Slow moving, but good Japanese psychological thriller about a mutual contract murder. Very fatalistic, very doomed, very improbable to western sensibilities. However, it does work, and you get the flash right before Daigo does of who exactly is the third lady.
Left in the Little Free Library (#1508) on Cretin and MRB.
