1816 first published -- A Bantam Classic

Back Cover: "Emma," first published in 1816, was written when Jane Austen was at the height of her powers. In it, we have her two greatest comic creations -- the eccentric Mr. Woodhouse and that quintessential bore, Miss Bates. In it, too, we have her most profound characterization: the witty, imaginative, self-deluded Emma, a heroine the author declared "no one but myself will much life," but who has been much loved by generations of readers. Delightfully funny, full of rich irony, "Emma" is regarded as one of Jane Austen's finest achievements.

COMMENTS: Due to the 19th century language, this is one of the rare instances where the movie is better than the book. I did watch the movie first and it helped me understand the book more. However, Miss Bates is much more annoying on the audio book, to the point of being impossible to listen to her voice. This is my 2nd favorite Austen book, next to Sense & Sensibility, now that I have read all 6 of Austen's main novels. As much as I like the book, I must admit Emma receives more praise for being a good person than she deserves.
