What is truth? Unlike Pilate, who presumably thought in Latin, QUID EST VERITAS?, and could find his answer in an anagram of the question, EST VIR QUI ADEST, we get no clear answer from this book. As narrator, Annice knows she is lying to her school friends, but is she also lying to herself about her strange experiences? Or merely to us? And her story is placed inside a framing narrative from the point of view of Annice's mother, which suggests a whole new layer or more of truth and lies. In the end, Shaw gives us no key - we must walk her maze of truth and untruth for ourselves.
A strange book. I'm glad I read it, although I don't expect to want to read it again. In view of the ending, it needs to be released on a park bench; in the light of Annice's story, preferably in the garden of a large house with a maze.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
At the climate strike. I wanted to release this in an actual maze, but we have no plans to visit one in the near future. I chose this for the climate strike because I think "walking the maze" is an apt metaphor for what our policy makers need to do at the moment!
As we came away from the event, I tucked the book into the back of a road sign next to the parking ticket machine in the market place.
