I found this book to be a bit slow going at first, but about a third of the way into it, it begins to pick up. This book makes me realise that all families are a bit strange, as illustrated by father George's obsession with a patch of eczema on his leg and the entire fmaily's preoccupation with trying to stop daughter Katie from marrying Ray, who just isn't "one of them". In the end, it was quite an entertaining family farce.

Enjoyed this book. Using belivable characters Haddon tells a very human story...We know people like these characters. George, retired, fixates on a spot of ecemza on his leg and politely and quietly has a nervous breakdown. His wife, son and daughter are self-obessed and wrapped up inthe daughter's wedding preparations so pay little attention to George. some funny and sad scenes as the family drama plays out. I think he captured the dynamics of a modern family and family relationships well. During all the crises there was some emotional growth for the characters. I liked the way it all played out.
