I am a big fan of this author, so couldn't resist when I found this for sale in a 'cheapy' book shop.
I really enjoyed this book. Cornwell writes a compelling story that tries to answer why, how and be whom Stonehenge was built. It follows the life of Saban, a young son of the tribe's chief, who only wants to be a warrior. When he and his brother, Lengar, come across a wounded man, he is shocked that Lengar can kill him in cold blood. But his brother also turns against him when the stranger is found carrying a fortune in gold. Saban escapes, but the gold changes everything. Lengar wants to use it to build an army to defeat their neighbours; Camaban, their crippled, outlawed brother, wants to use it to build a mighty temple; Saban just wants to live in peace. Set against violence and murder, Saban instead finds himself building the temple, creating his brother's mad dream and wasting a life on shaping the tribes future.
The story is enjoyable and believable. Cornwell includes a historical note that describes the archeological evidence that he based the novel on and that is just as fascinating as the rest of the book. A great read that I may well return to in the future, although it is being leant to my Dad first of all as I think he'll like this as well.

I was VERY pleasantly surprised and gobsmacked to recieve this book this morning. But it did not travel alone!!! Oh no! It is one of 10!!! Look out Dark-Draco. I'm going to attempt to get you back!
I was quite excited to read this because I do love a bit of historic fiction (it's quite interesting reading an authors take on what could be behind a historic event). But when I began, I quickly became worried as I was having trouble connecting with the narrative. It just wasn't capturing my interest. For the most part I found it a hard slog getting through this book, I found it boring, mundane, repetitive and uninspired. There were a few glimmers of interest, but over all, not enough for me to justify reading it (event though I did finish it). Disappointed.
Sending this off to Scotland as part of a surprise RABCK wish granting package for a fellow bookcrosser.
Happy reading!
