Christopher Isherwood is the narrator of Goodbye to Berlin. His story obliquely evokes the gathering storm in Berlin before and just after the rise to power of the Nazis, as seen through the eyes of a series of individuals: his landlady, Fräulein Schroeder; Sally Bowles, the English upper-class waif; the Nowaks, a struggling working-class family; and the Landauers, a wealthy family of Jewish store owners, whose lives are about to be ruined.
shnedwards' review:
Books set in 1930s Germany could easily be depressing. It's a particularly depressing period of German history. But these stories are told with such warmth and humour you could almost forget the darkness lurking at the edges.

A decent read. Like shnedwards says, these could be very depressing stories, but they're not, they are full of warmth and character.
