Thank you so much for searching me out with this. I have become such a Jasper Fforde convert because of this Uncon. Looking forward to reading it.

This has taken me quite a while to read. Partly because it is a large book and I wasn't carrying with me while I was trudging through the snow, but also because the story didn't grip me as much as the first two. That said, I still love his ideas and the thought that characters have another life outside their book.

This was great! I had so much fun reading this, and this is really the first time I've read a story that was so chock-full of puns and allusions and still had a plot to hold it together. Brilliant! There were moments when I thought "Why did I wait 10 years to read this? Why didn't I run out and buy it the second it came out?", but then it's not like this has aged badly at all, and this way, I probably knew more of the background stories and caught more hints, so all the better.
I can't possibly say which elements I enjoyed most because there was just so much good stuff. I loved the idea of an operating system upgrade for books, and the clever explanations of u-less American spellings and the loss of the library of Alexandria. Also, reading Enid Blyton (which I quite like to do for a bit of cozy nostalgia every now and then) will never be the same innocent pleasure, I'm sure! Deciphering mispelings is always a lot of fun, as are the "credits" and "advertisements", and I immediately liked Randolph, Lola and Bradshaw's wife. And I was so happy I had
The Big Over Easy at hand to start right away and see what had become of
Caversham Heights -- this connection is pure genius!
ETA: an extra bonus of this copy is that it comes from Swindon, obviously. Love the UnCon/magic roundabout bookplate!

First of all, I am very sorry that this book had to wait so long on my pile(s :-)) of to-be-read books! For some reason, it was a bit challenging for me, I had trouble to get into it, put it down several times and had to wait for a more stress-free time. I am very happy I did give it another try because it contains some glorious moments and hilarious scenes and sentences ("'Had' had had approval but 'had had' had not; equally it is true to say that that 'that that' had had approval but that that other 'that that' had not." p. 257 :)) and, being a big fan of Jack Spratt and the Nursery Crime series, I was, of course, very happy to learn how it all began...

At the end of the second book, Thursday had to find the best possible hiding place where Chronoguards wouldn't find her. She takes part in the Character Exchange Programme and goes hiding in the Well of Lost Plots, inside an unpublished book called Caversham Heights. In this third volume of the series we learn more about the BookWorld and Jurisfiction as Thursday gets ready to take her exams to become a full agent. Her husband still exists only in her memories, so when Thursday starts forgetting him and other details, Granny Next (aged 108) has to come to the rescue. After all, Thursday is pregnant - even though she doesn't always remember it.
"'Work, work, work,' said the small man, taking a swig of tea and looking up at me with small yet oddly intense eyes." (page 262)
