Having not read an Iain Banks for ages and having not enjoyed the dourness of the last one I did (Song of Stone), I was pleased that he was back on quirky family story territory. It was very much about the journey rather than the destination as the revelation of the family secret wasn't so surprising. there was a bit of political spouting off being done by putting words into the characters mouths but that didn't spoil my overall enjoyment.

I picked this up this book half expecting something akin to The Wasp Factory or The Crow Road (yes, it's some time since I read Iain Banks). the masterful storytelling is the same but the family saga with a predictable but still shocking twist was a revelation.
A really good read; but what would you expect from Iain Banks.

A family saga - well written, as always by this author. It draws you in and along as the central character's history unfolds.
