I spotted this at a Humane Society benefit tag sale this weekend; since it's been discussed quite a bit by BCers (and only cost 25 cents!) I nabbed it. Will update when I've read it.

This one's a wake-up call, all right - a reminder of just how hard it is to get a leg up if you're starting from zero. Makes me feel very thankful that I have a car and a house and a college degree... I hope that working conditions aren't universally as awful as the author's experiences showed, but I fear that for most of the low-wage jobs they probably are. (Perhaps they're even worse, since the author had the significant advantage of knowing she didn't have to depend on these jobs...)

I've been wanting to read this book for a while now, so I'm really looking forward to it. I'll try and finish it before November, as this time of year is very busy for me, so if anyone wants to read it next, just let me know, but I won't be able to finish as quickly as I'd like. Too many books, too little time....

I was glued to this book, reading it in record time at the expense of my normal life. It made me feel indignant and outraged, but I also laughed out loud many times at Ehrenreich's wit.

I'm sending this on to the BCer Sweet-pea for a trade. Hope you enjoy it!

This book was so very interesting. I was outraged at the way this woman was treated in her jobs ... the lack of care that many places have for their employees and their needs. It sickened me that people in the US cannot make it on the salaries that are allegedly "fair".
This book made me very thankful to have a college degree, a source of good income, a home and a car!
I was, however, surprised that the author took jobs in two areas that were dependent on tourists for their income (Maine and Key West). I thought she would have chosen more blue-collar type places.
Up for trade!
