This is the first book I've read by Elizabeth Berg and I will certainly be reading more. She captures the fear and uncertainty of an army child constantly on the move. She also manages to make the violent father sympathetic as a character which is a rare talent - I felt his pain at the end of the book as his errors of judgement (or complete lack of it) as a parent are brought home to roost.
