Description from Amazon
Eamon Redmond is a judge in Ireland's high court, a completely legal creature who is just beginning to discover how painfully unconnected he is from other human beings. With effortless fluency, Colm Tóibín reconstructs the history of Eamon's relationships – with his father, his first 'girl', his wife and the children who barely know him. He gives us a family as minutely realized as any of John McGahern's and he writes about Eamon's affection for the Irish coast with such painterly skill that the land itself becomes a character.

This felt like a sideways look at the personal life of a family maybe deeply involved or perhaps only on the periphery of Irish political life at a time of great change. Tóibín subtely incorporates many aspects of Irish life and landscape into his narrarive which although often quite slow and thoughtful is none the less absorbing.

Thanks for sending this, looking forward to getting to it as I have been meaning to read this author for quite a while. Thanks
I read this pretty much in the space of one day and it flew by, such an easy read. I enjoyed the way we saw Wanin at two contrasting moments in his life during alternate chapters. A beautiful softly spoken book. I'll certainly be searching out more from this author.
This book will either be sent out as part of the 1001 VBB or the 1001 stick or twist game. Thanks for sharing x

Sending out as part of the 1001 Stick or Twist game, I hope you and the next person (I saw marsala stuck) both enjoy this one, good to see a 1001 book moving.
Just started reading this, only a few pages in and I'm remembering how much I like Colm Toibin's writing. Will pass on as soon as I'm done.
I did like this, but mainly because I like Colm Toibin's writing, not because I loved the story. I guess I find it hard to relate to anything in the book. It was interesting to note how outwardly detached Eamon seemed from his life when actually he thought he was perfectly fine. His refusal to acknowledge a problem, draws back, refuses to face consequences - a charactersitic that fits well with his approach to his job.
Not my favourite novel by this author (try The Master if you're looking for something amazing).

On its way to Marsala in London as part of the 1001 stick/twist game!
Arrived safely today, thank you!
As I had just finished a book I can dive straight in to it.
I must say I really enjoy Colm Toibin's writing aswell, it is beautiful.

just finished this book. I liked it very much, my first book by this author. It gave me the feeling of being in Ireland, there witht he characters in the story. I did like Eamon, for in spite of all his shortcomings he is so human.
