From amazon.co.uk:
"A key section of this book was inspired by the discovery of a cache of original love-letters written in China in the late nineteen twenties by two separate women to the same man.
Told with insight and compassion, this absorbing novel moves between Hong Kong, Norfolk and the Midlands, and shows how the consequences of an act of infidelity have shaped the lives of three generations of women.
After a phone call from her younger brother, Ann travels to Hong Kong in search of the truth about their scandalous mother, Vivienne. Here, she discovers a series of letters and journal entries which reveal a secret about her beloved grandmother's early life that challenges her most deeply felt convictions. Ann must also face up to her own part in an event which took place just before her sixteenth birthday, and caused the break-up of the family.
Hong Kong itself, with its exotic mix of old and new in the bustling urban districts, and the quiet charm of beautiful Lamma Island, plays a key part in Ann's reappraisal of her own life and marriage, and the unexpected dilemma that confronts her."
My opinion:
I've really enjoyed this tale of 3 generations of women and their families. Specifically the relationship between Ann and her mother was as intricate as it was intriguing, as the story develops and new secrets are unraveled. The plot line and character relations required some paying-attention to follow at first, making it a bit mysterious. A wonderful setting in Hong Kong and Lamma Island, so vividly described as though one can almost taste and smell it, it's filled with an image of colour and beauty. And I would love to find those wonderful trees with the gurgling sap!

Book is off to its first reader: earthcaroleann, posting today. Enjoy!
Arrived at the weekend and I finished my current read on Sunday so I've started this one already. I don't think it will take me long.

I really enjoyed this - she kept you wondering and I never guessed any of the secrets. It was especially annoying when she introduced you to George, left you not knowing who he was and then he disappeared out of the story for quite a few chapters! At first I was worried it was just going to be another family saga, having just finished one that did not grab me, but this did. The ending left you wondering as well, but I won't say why so I don't spoil it for anyone else. So glad I've enjoyed another Uncon author.

On it's way to the next person in the ring.
Just received. I will try to be quick as I see there are quite a few others wanting it in the next 3 weeks.
The book arrivwed safely today. Hopefully I will be able to finish in time before the convention. Thank you Phoenix for the ring and MissMarkey for sending it.
Finished it and I really enjoyed it! I think sometimes family sagas can be a bit to overwhelming, with writers getting to many shock twists in it, just to keep it interesting. I think with this book the writer got the tone just right, there were a lot of surprises, but I didn't get bored of them. I also liked the chinese elements shining trough.
I've contacted the next bookcrosser for his/her adress, but I probably won't the book until after the convention.

I enjoyed this book very much, particularly Belle's story. Lamma came over as a star in its own right, and it is another destination added to the list of places to go! I will get the book to the post as soon as the snow and ice let me out of the village.
The book has arrived safely, thank you.
I really enjoyed this book. I loved the characters, the setting and the storyline!
Posting on to Lizzy-stardust. Enjoy!!

tried to get into this book but the writing felt very disjointed, as though the author cound picture in her head so well what was happening that she neglected to put those details on paper. Anyway, I've decided it's not for me, so will be sending it on to the next person as soon as I get their address. Thanks for sharing, anyway.

Unfortunately, it looks like this book has gotten lost in the mail. Maybe it'll resurface some day, but for now, I'll consider it lost.
