From the back:
"1464. Cousin is at war with cousin, as the houses of York and Lancaster tear themselves apart...
And Elizabeth Woodville, a young Lancastrian widow, armed only with her beauty and her steely determination, seduces and marries the charismatic warrior king: Edward IV of York.
Crowned Queen of England, surrounded by conflict, betrayal and murder, Elizabeth rises to the demands of her position, fighting tenaciously for her family's survival. Most of all, she must defend her two sons, who become the central figuresin a mystery that has confounded historians for centuries: the missing Princes in the Tower.
Set amid the tumult of the Wars of the Roses, this is the first of a stunning new series, in which internationally bestselling author Philippa Gregory brings this extraordinary drama to vivid life through the women - beginning with Elizabeth Woodville, the White Queen."

I can't wait to read the books to follow in this sequence. I have always enjoyed the Tudor series books but of course those are about that darling time in history that has inspired many authors and film makers before and after Gregory, and one I am fairly well acquainted with. Unlike this earlier setting around the Wars of the Roses. Gregory is well known for her decent research of the books she writes so it is nice to learn some historical facts and become more familiar with a time in history and its main characters about which I don't know much. The story Gregory has built around this background is exciting and very readable, as usual. It also brings to life the postition of women, even those around power, and the general drama of the times when men were so much more at the whim of weather, illness and other unforeseen influences - not to mention the aspect of the paranormal that was often attributed to such influences and could have a dire effect on those to be thought, or maliciously accused, of having dealings in that direction. Gregoary's choice of telling the story through women again makes it so much more than a tale of many wars...
