Book Description
When we first meet 14-year-old Susie Salmon, she is already in heaven. This was before milk carton photos and public service announcements, she tells us; back in 1973, when Susie mysteriously disappeared, people still believed these things didn't happen.

In the sweet, untroubled voice of a precocious teenage girl, Susie relates the awful events of her death, and her own adjustment to the strange new place she finds herself. (It looks a lot like her school playground, with the good kind of swingset.)

With love, longing, and a growing understanding, Susie watches her family as they cope with their grief--her father embarks on a search for the killer, her sister undertakes a feat of amazing daring, her little brother builds a fort in her honor--and begin the difficult process of healing.

I finished reading "The Lovely Bones" this morning. The horrific, shocking first chapter describes in detail Susie's murder by a neighbor. The rest of the book is narrated by Susie as she watches over her grieving family, friends, a police detective working on her murder, and her murderer.

The book is somewhat unusual; I'll give it that. I can't say I was bored by the story, it was enjoyable enough, but I never really felt an overwhelming need to pick the book up and keep reading. I was not glued to the page. A year from now, I'll probably only remember that I read the book but won't be able to remember any details. I think the reason for this is because most of the characters seemed so thin. Susie's father was the most well-developed of all the characters, but even though I just finished the story, I can't remember what his name was. I never really felt involved with their lives; like Susie, I was outside and merely observing without being able to touch.

Wow! It's been awhile since a book has kept me so thoroughly engrossed that I couldn't put it down. I felt myself really drawn in right from the start, and was surprised that I found it so believeable. Well, up until the part about Susie and Ray (toward the end)...that was an "aw, come on...." moment. But, all in all, a good read. The book will continue its journey as soon as I receive the next reader's address. Thanks again!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and must say it was very different from the usual accounts of such tragedies. It makes one acutely aware of the intense emotional pain and suffering that family members and friends endure when a child is lost in this manner. Sad to say, but we hear of these horrors frequently.

I contacted the final person on the bookray and he requested to be skipped since he'd already obtained a copy. Since that makes me last then, I plan to offer it as a RABCK or wild release it. Thanks to Valkyrie119 for initially registering the book and to bksfamily for starting the ray!
