Thank you Mathgirl40! The book came in the mail yesterday; I can't wait to start reading it!
I'm so glad to have finally have the chance to read this memoir! The author is able to personalise three very different eras of China through the lives of herself, her mother and grandmother. She was particularly good at explaining how the process of indoctrination of thought worked and her own thought processes throughout. I have a much better appreciation for the Chinese grad students' position from our Poli Sci 475 seminar for having read this book.

Grabbed at get together
This was a very long, but very good read. Occasionally I got a bit confused since although overall it follows chronological order it does go back and forth in time a little bit. Although it focused mainly on three generations in her family, it did touch on her great grandmother as well. It was fascinating how much changed from generation to generation and within their own lives. I thought the author did a good job depicting her family and took the time to make each of their own feelings understandable and their individual trials very real.
It was also a new look at the changes which took place in China before WWI through to after the cultural revolution. A lot of general information which I already knew, though somethings still get me despite knowing exactly what will be said about it (such as the foot binding). She did a good job of depicting a few of the good things that the communists did initially begin to accomplish right after WWII (such as starting some education around women's rights and the elimination of VD) even if not everything stuck in the long run. I thought it also did a good job that whether people were cunning or not, they often didn't fully understand what they were asking of others or how severe the consequences could be for others or themselves.
Thanks for the great read.

This book has been sitting on my shelf for too long. I'm so glad I finally read it, I did not know any of what China went through in the 20th Century. Although this reads as a story following three women through the decades it was incredibly informative. I highly suggest this to everyone.
I'm bringing this book to the monthly book crossing meeting at cravings market restaurant
Wild Swans depicts the lives of a grandmother, mother, and the daughter and how their lives were affected by the times they lived in and the treatment of Chinese women over the course of their lives. it goes into detail of the horrific treatment of the Chinese under Japan occupation and how these 3 spirited ladies sought to make their own path in a time when it wasn't easy being female.
A great book with lots of history and an insight to Chinese culture.
