The first book in the now famous Inspector Rebus series of novels, this is a cracking start. Detective Sergeant John Rebus has been investigating the abduction and murder of two young girls in Edinburgh, and then a third goes missing. Then the messages begin to arrive: knotted string and matchstick crosses - taunting Rebus with pieces of a puzzle only he can solve.
