from amazon:
The Great War took much more than lives. In Freddie Watson's case, it took his beloved brother and, at times, his peace of mind. In the winter of 1928, still seeking resolution, Freddie is travelling through the French Pyrenees. During a snowstorm, his car spins off the mountain road. Shaken, he stumbles into the woods, emerging by a tiny village. There he meets Fabrissa, a beautiful local woman. By the time dawn breaks, he will have stumbled across a tragic mystery that goes back through the centuries.

I'm afraid I won't be able to take home half the great books I picked up tonight, but this made the short-list and has at least accompanied me to my B&B in Barnes for the time being.
Thank you for the lovely evening, London bookcrossers!
Thank you for the lovely evening, London bookcrossers!
This book kept me company during my London vacation and was enjoyed whenever I needed to take the weight of my feet during long walks across the city, or at night at my B&B. I finished it waiting for my plane back at Heathrow yesterday morning.
This story of a young man crippled by grief and seeking egress or at least respite from his condition in the French Pyrenees is haunting in more than one sense of the word. I love me a good ghost story, but this one's background is so bittersweet and beautifully executed that it it quite outstanding. It reminded me of The Greatcoat a bit (what with the love story and backdrop of war), but this is rather less sad(!), and also did not scare me.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
Happy Hallowe'en (and thank you for hosting this awesome exchange)!
I had really planned on sending you The Greatcoat, but I see you've already got that, too. Well, I can highly recommend it! :)
This is a lovely story too, although I found it more bittersweet than outright scary. Still, it nicely captures the mood for the "quiet holidays", I think. Enjoy!

Thank you so much for including this book in my Halloween exchange gift, as well as the sweet treats, handmade card, and spooky spider bags.
I found this an interesting way to tell a complicated story, and feel it reflects the problems of veterans in the present day as well. I read it as it passed thru my house between Wellington and Nelson.
Received back from -tui-
An interesting read, I enjoyed learning about the culture of a small town in Europe.
