The latest from one of my favourite perennial authors, a psychological thriller, a modern morality tale, and a 'dry-mouthed and sweaty-palmed page-turner'...all those hyphens, it must be good!
(29/05/12) This grabbed me from the beginning; Boyd back to his best, or rather re-inventing himself as a thriller writer. This would make a great TV drama or film. Can’t wait to see wait he does with the Bond franchise!
I’m sure I’m not giving too much away by telling you that this is a story about an ordinary Joe (an American scientist Adam Kindred, a weather expert – hence the ‘Ordinary Thunderstorms’ quote at the beginning) who falls into a chaotic and frightening underworld not of his own making. The main lead was strangely un-engaging, and a bit too resourceful to be believable, going into deep hiding and creating new personas, going from a naïve ‘American in London’ to an expert survivalist, beggar, impersonator & agitator. That said, the plot, albeit a bit far-fetched, and the host of characters that Adam comes across are the real heroes; the reverend ‘John Christ’, Mhouse, owner of the ‘evil’ big pharma company, and the hired killer (I forget the names) – to name but a few. 7 stars for Adam, 9 stars for everyone else :)
