A very ambitious first novel, quite a pageturner, a great read! It's focused mostly on cultural identity, but there are many other themes in this novel, migration, family, Alzheimers, bulimia, Chinese history, the role of women in China, prostitution etc. Deanna Fei gives excellent character descriptions - rather complex, all with their own flaws - and explores their relationships with each other. I liked the alternating perspectives, and what I also enjoyed were the depictions of landscapes and cities in China. Recommendable.
Journal Entry 5 by ApoloniaX at Wishlist Surprise, A RABCK -- Controlled Releases on Wednesday, November 23, 2011
Thank you SO much for this wonderful surprise. Life has been challenging lately, and this act of kindness made my day.
Thanks again for sharing this book, ApoloniaX! It's an ambitious (perhaps a bit overly ambitious) story about the complicated relationships within Irene's family and the desire to know where one belongs. My favourite character was Kay; I felt that she was the one I got to know best.
