Ex-library book.

From the back cover:

"Everyone's excited about the prom except Ashley, who couldn't care less. She's too busy worrying about her crazy family and TJ, her flaky boyfriend, who wants them to move in together after graduation but just doesn't seem to be around when she needs him.

But when disaster strikes the prom committee, somehow Ashley gets roped into helping save the evening. And Ashley finds herself learning quite a lot about organising a prom - as well as learning a little more about herself."

Another excellent book from Laurie Hulse Anderson, dealing with the real lives of teenagers.

The story reminded me somewhat of "Pretty in Pink" but with a harder edge. Ashley goes to a rough school, has a somewhat dodgy boyfriend, a chaotic home life, and low aspirations. She does her homework in the loos, has a stack of detentions to make up, and is basically "normal".

But she's feisty, and has common sense, and to see her blossom and realise that perhaps what she thought she wanted wasn't what she really did ... it was cool.
