Synopsis from Amazon:-
'Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder - and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed, truculent computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate. When the pair link Harriet's disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. But the Vangers are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves. '
Much hyped media sensation which everyone seems to love. Bought to read for my book group.

Well, I enjoyed this in parts. It is a page turner and there are plenty of twists and turns to keep you interested. I think it is too long and the translation is clunky at times. My main objections lie with the hero and the way his character is presented. It is as if the author is projecting his sexual fantasies onto his character in that he is frequently propositioned by attractive women who want to have sex with him on a no-strings-attached basis! On the whole the characters are rather stereotypical and not well developed, especially the females. I liked the parts of the book which deal with solving the central mystery, but i was not so absorbed in the stories relating to the publishing/magazine world. I felt this book had a feeling of Dan Brown about it and once that idea was planted I could not get it out of my head. It is a good holiday read I'd say but I was disappointed as I was expecting something a bit more sophisticated and clever.

Hmmm. I've heard all the hype about this and thought I'd grab it at the York meetup last night, to see for myself what all the fuss is about...
