I really enjoyed this story, which is told starkly but with compassion—a perfect prose style for narrating the experiences of put-upon teenage boys. I loved the way mystery and legend unfolded and were woven into the events of the present. The story was also much darker than I expected, knowing nothing about this book beyond that it had been made into a Disney movie. Now I'm really curious what that movie is like. The book is really pretty brutal.
