The ultimate classic vampire story - everyone should read this. It is such an iconic book. I have owned my copy for years, but am just getting round to registering it. Really looking forward to reading it again.

This is an absolute classic in every sense of the word. Not many books told like this work, but this one is a perfect example - as it flits back and forth between the diaries of the main characters, you perfectly get the sense of doom, fear and uncertainty that they face in their battle against the undead Count.

Yes, by today's standard, it's completely sexist, with lot's of paragraphs about the men going out to brave their lives for the little woman, and the females do a lot of swooning, but I didn't find it bothered me at all. It all fit together and Mina turns out to be a stronger character than made out in the beginning.

The only slight downfall for me is the rush around the ending. The actual show down with the Count, in the mountain passes of Transylvania, is almost an anti-climax. With so much build up to it, I wanted more. But then it does work brilliantly as well. Our heroes close in on the Vampire, entrap him and dispatch him without the teeth-gnashing angst of a lot of modern horror stories.

This is what all Vampire novels should be like ....
