His Dark Materials 3: The Amber Spyglass

I bought the complete trilogy a number of years ago and enjoyed reading them. Now that I have finally got round to registering them, I am looking forward to re-reading the set and then releasing them out into the wild.
Wow - the third book definitely puts you through the ringer! The last few chapters are almost painful reading, so much better than the rest of the series - and I thought the rest of the series was pretty good.
In this volume, the trilogy definitely steps out of being for children and enters the realm of Adulthood. Just as Lyra and Will grow up, so the reader has to deal with more mature ideas and themes. And I loved it for that. I haven't exactly been Lyra's biggest fan during this re-read, but by leaving her childishness behind and focusing more on what she needs to do rather than wants to do, she becomes instantly likeable - maybe that's my own adultness coming out ;).
A hell of a lot happens in this book and some of the characters come and go within a few pages. I loved the breaks from the action that followed Mary and Mulefa. A lovely world to live in. I even liked the way that Mrs Coulter and Lord Asriel, despite being pretty evil throughout, ended up minor heroes in a twisted kind of way.
And the overall message in the book? To live life as if there isn't anything better to follow? To encourage kindness, promote knowledge and self-discovery, to be brave enough to stop and look around you once in a while? I can get behind that all the way!
