Read over three days and really enjoyed it! A guilty pleasure but never the less a very well written and compelling one at that.
I really enjoyed this novel, even more so because I had a disappointing read of a book called 'Pemberley' in which frankly I felt let down.
This was the reverse and I revelled in the plot line and characters, I found it a really difficult book to put down the more I read.
Jane Hayes is a frustrated romantic, New York graphic artist and Mr Darcy addict. So far, her love life has been a succession of disappointments as man after man fails to live up to her expectations and dreams. Her mother begs her to be more realistic, but Jane holds little hope of finding her own Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy of Pemberley.
When her Great Aunt Caroline dies, Jane finds that her relative has left her a three week holiday at Pembrook Park, a place in the heart of the English Countryside where a girl can live out her Austinian fantasy - for an astronomical fee. Luckily Great Aunt Caroline was more than comfortably off and Jane's flight of fantasy isn't going to cost her a penny.
Soon, though she is immersed in Regency England, with empire line waist dresses, bonnets, and Gentlemen in riding boots, Jane finds that not everyone is as they seem. Jane yearns to exorcise Mr Darcy from her romantic expectations, but fate, and two men in Austenland seem determined to change her mind in two different directions.
Can Jane free her mind, her luck in love and her life with this trip?
As I say I really enjoyed this one, so will now PM Lucy Lemon for her addy to get this travelling soonest.
Many, many thanks for this ring Dantemiro!

Arrived a few days ago, but I haven't been able to make a JE on it, as I kept getting an error message whenever I tried. Which is annoying, as I could make them for other books. Weird. Anyway, I read the book this afternoon in one sitting, and I really enjoyed it! At first I found it a bit difficult to get into, but that was gone by about the end of the first chapter. Parts of it annoyed me a little bit - Martin mostly! - but I loved the ending!
About to check out the author's website to see who her dream cast list would be! Hopefully will send to the next reader at the weekend. Thanks for sharing!

Apologies for the delay in journalling; the gremlins have moved into my computer and this is my second attempt to do so from my phone!
Austenland was total escape! It was quirky and fun and romantic! Jane did annoy me on and off, but I loved the fact that she got so much into the Regency way of life! Pembrook Park was full of funny and unique characters which made the book fly by.
I'm not fully on board with Shannon Hale's choice of cast for a movie adaptation of her book! Colin Firth was never my ideal Mr Darcy. I much preferred Elliot Cowan in Lost in Austen and he is always the way I imagine the deep, brooding Darcy character.
I have Icila's addy and will send the book to her in the morning. Thank you for a very fun read Dantemiro!

This was a fun romance and it was well-suited to a lazy post-holiday afternoon spent on a couch. But I couldn't help comparing it to its inspiration - Jane Austen's novels themselves. In comparison, Austenland is simply not very well crafted. I really enjoyed this, it was funny and easy to read, I just couldn't put it down :) The ending had a nice, unexpected twist (and I'm glad it turned out that way). Jane did seem a bit over-analytical to me sometimes (which annoyed me a bit.. I don't think people can change so easily..).
Oh and I agree with shelj7k, the Mr. Darcy from Lost in Austen (Elliot Cowan) is also more what I had in mind.. more dark and brooding :P (and nice to picture him here as the Darcy-ish Nobley)

This has arrived safely to me in Spain. Unfortunately right when I should be writing reports :( However, I'll get to it soon. I am a big Austen fan, in fact I have just watched the BBC Colin Firth version of P&P (yes, for the umpteenth time!) Thanks for including me.
Jane is in her early thirties, every break up sends her into the arms of her secret love - the books of Jane Austen and their adaptations, among them the BBC's 1995 version. But, has Jane's refuge become an obsession? What real man can live up to Mr. Darcy?
A meeting with an elderly aunt, Aunt Caroline, results in an unusual legacy - 2 weeks at "Austenland" in England, where Jane can play at being Elizabeth Bennet, or another Austen heroine.
On arriving at Austenland, Jane undergoes a complete transformation, from head to toe, including her underwear, and must relinquish her modcons, like her mobile, becoming Miss Erstwhile. The question is whether this will be Jane's final hurrah with all things Austen? Luckily she has the Regency men to help her decide, there is the charming Colonel Andrews, the aloof Mr. Nobley, but there is a spanner in the works in the form of the hunky gardner, Martin. Her rivals for the men are Miss Charming, a brash American in her 50s, and Miss Heartwright, staying in a nearby cottage.
This is for all those women who have THAT BBC version of Pride and Prejudice, who find themselves imagining living in Austen's novels, and who secretly have wanted to be called Miss ........., without it being said by a pupil!
What makes the book fun is Jane's attitude, we see her trying hard to adapt to Regency life, and despite the waspish co-ordinator, Mrs. Wattlesbrook, she doesn't lose herself in the role, but rather seems to find the courage to come out of her shell.
A light read, perfect for a post report writing weekend. I would say you need to know Jane Austen's books before reading this, or some of the humour will be lost on you.
Hopefully there will be some more members for the ray, so I'll keep it for the mo. Thanks for sharing.

I didn't quite get Jane's character in the beginning, but I end up enjoying the book, especially the ending. It's a departure from the author's usual YA books, and I do think they are better than this one, although come to think of it, it's very much the same theme of Princess finding Prince after some growing up. And yes, Mrs. Wattlesbrook makes a fine witch/evil stepmother. : )
The funny moments are quite hilarious, and the airport scene is a hoot.
I haven't seen the BBC miniseries, so after reading the book I dug around on Youtube. I have to agree with shelj7k that the guy in Lost in Austen is a nicer Darcy. His wet look totally trumps Colin Firth's!! Enough to make you forget all Regency etiquette!

I finished this a couple of days ago, but with Thanksgiving this week I haven't been online much. It was enjoyable for the most part, and I like the author's breezy writing style. I don't know that I would want to vacation at Austenland myself, it seemed like the majority of the time spent there would have been incredibly boring.
Jane Hayes is an American who has had a succession of disappointing relationships. She secretly yearns for a Mr. Darcy, and no man she meets ever lives up to that ideal. When an elderly relative passes away, she leaves Jane a paid vacation at Austenland, an immersion experience where women live out their Austen fantasies. Jane isn't totally thrilled at the idea, but then decides that this may be the perfect opportunity to get her Darcy fixation out of her system and then find a "realistic" man.
Other guests at Austenland include Miss Charming, who cracked me up, the way she tried to talk like an Englishwoman, with her "what-whats" and such. The gentlemen seemed a little boring, though Mr. Nobley, the most Darcy-like, piques Jane's interest while annoying her at the same time. Then Jane meets Martin the gardener, a breath of fresh air, not to mention exciting as, being a servant, he is not supposed to speak to or interact with the guests. I think if I were Jane I'd have found myself drawn to him as well.
The ending was a little unexpected to me, and while the scene at the airport was amusing, I would have liked it to end a little differently...but I don't want to specify here as it's a little spoilery. (You can scroll to the end of my review on my
blog if you want to know.)
I have the next person's address and will stop at the post office before work one day next week to get this moving.

I'm sorry to say I was disappointed in this. I get that Jane Hayes was never as interested in the Austen experience as she was in finding a new romance, but she doesn't even start with an open mind, kvetching about the clothes and hiding her cell phone, and then starting after Martin because she can see the flickering light of his television. What a waste of a heavenly experience!
And then she finds her romance, based entirely on long looks in the drawing room, and a few sentences during walks. Lizzy Bennet did better, even with Wickham. He was lying, but at least she was having conversations with him. And she learned fast, so that when she accepted Mr. Darcy she did so with a good understanding of his personality.
Perhaps I'm approaching this from the wrong perspective, being someone who seriously adores all the Austen books, but hasn't had to go out on a first date for over forty years. If what you're looking for is more 'Girl Meets/Bags Boy" rather than homage to Lady A., this is clearly a lot of fun. Vexter is absolutely right: this does not stand up well in comparison to the original. Hmm, guess I'd better go reread it some more!

I was expecting too much of this book. It's a nice story, but somehow hasty and patched together. It was like a written out TV series episode. I have enjoyed many Austen-inspired contemporary books much more than this, but this is a good light reading anyway. I liked Mr. Nobley, but I couldn't stand Jane, and that's a bit problematic when she's the main character...

Well, I think it's time for a positive review again, isn't it?
I have only read a couple of other Austen-inspired books before this one, so my points of comparison are few - but I loved this book and would've loved to read it in one go, had not work and life interrupted. So it took me two days instead :D
I think you have to approach Austenland as contemporary chick-lit rather than something that you compare to Austen's own work. Rather than trying to be a modern-day Jane Austen, the author, IMHO anyway, wanted to provide identification points to all those Austen/Mr. Darcy/Colin Firth fans out there (and here, krhm) who occasionally indulge in daydreaming about the perfect Regency romance. And I think she succeeded very well. I might even seek out the sequel, Midnight in Austenland.
Thanks for sharing. I'm now off to PM the next person for their address.
P.S. I loved the dedication!

I was a bit wary after all those journals but then I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It is a bit more chick-litty than I usually like but it had the Austen theme and if you don't take it too seriously, it is quite a fun read for a weekend.
Will ask then next one on the list for the address.
30.8. On its way to Rochester74.

ChickLit in a Jane-Austen-Reality-Holiday-Resort for rich bored wifes playing romance with a Mr. Darcy kind of gentelman? This idea is interesting and totally weird and it is no suprise that Jane is wishing for something real.

Nice reading for a November weekend. I enjoyed the part about the boredom. So it's not quite inspiring or really new the book has some funny moments.

When I opened the book two days ago there was a card from tourvel with greetings and the announcement of a visit to Berlin in summer. We've actually met during this visit :o)
Reading this is fun,
and I finished it in the night of Dec. 8th (reading the second half without pause and having a very short sleep afterwards...) I could have done without the descriptions of Janes previous boyfriends but maybe they added sth. to the story I can't quite put my finger on.
The next day I watched the movie trailers again and now I'm undecided whether to go watch the movie or not, as it is quite a bit different it seems.

A very quick read and a cute story. Most of it was predictable of course, but there were a few characters who had a bit of a twist to them, which I liked.
