Well this is an odd little love story! Bettina is a bus. A long distance sort of bus. For most of her life she had transported people on the Paris to Lyon run. During that run she became close to one of her passengers, a young French scholar who, on his trip home from school each night, tended to read one particular book - La Roman de la Rose. One day while riding the bus home he meets a girl with whom he is so enchanted that he attempts to tell her the story of La Roman (which essentially suggests that "perfect" love is unattainable). When it becomes clear that he won't be able to finish the story, Bettina breaks down on the side of the road.

Now though as Bettina is nearing the end of her useful life. Spencer and Phoebe, two lovers who both abandoned their previous lives and lovers to be together, buy Bettina, restore her, and form "Bettina Lines", taking on passengers and travelling about the continent as the spirit moves them. Bettina of course loves this couple and wishes for them a "perfect" love.

Throughout the course of their travels and and time spent with the various passengers, Bettina has plenty of time to reflect on the nature of love and Spencer and Phoebe's chances of attaining that perfect love.

A delightful little read really although I'm not too sure that I understood the ending.
